    Pinging myself
Recently I got a notice that my account had been deactivated because of inactivity for a couple of years. Now I have logged on more recently than that, so it must be posting activity they're counting. (But even my last post was less than a year ago, so I don't know what's really going on.)

So here's a post to say I'm still here, even if I'm not using this account much.

    HP fanfic complete
HP and the Programmer's Printer is now complete in seven chapters. I'm rather pleased with it.

    Crossover fanfic
HP and the Programmer's Printer, Chapter 1. More will follow; Chapter 2 is almost ready, so I can promise at least that much soon. Update: Chapter 2 is up.

    LibraryThing stats
I just discovered a page of interesting statistics on my books listed on LibraryThing. For instance, the language statistics for my listed books are:

    352 English
    20 German
    7 French
    3 Italian
    2 Dutch
    1 Low German

This includes only the books which I've listed there, of course, and overrepresents the ones I consider "interesting," including a lot of my foreign-language books.

    Knowledgeable people forbidden
In an effort to make sure no one knowledgeable got to see the premiere of the creationist fantasy movie documentary Expelled, the presenters of the movie refused to admit science blogger PZ Myers. But in their zeal to keep him out, they neglected to check the identity of his guest, Richard Dawkins, who was let in without a question.

    Anyone new here?
It's been a long time since I've checked here, but now I'm wondering if LiveJournal's abolition of new Basic accounts will bring more people over here.

    Nothing happening?
I just checked my flist for the first time in a few weeks. Hardly anything, beyond announcements and weekly FoxTrot comics. The exodus of filkers from LJ hasn't happened. Sigh.

    Galactic death ray!

In an unprovoked act of intergalactic aggression, a black hole has blasted a jet of radiation at a neighboring galaxy.

"What we've identified is an act of violence by a black hole, with an unfortunate nearby galaxy in the line of fire," said Dan Evans, the study leader at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge. He said any planets orbiting the stars of the smaller galaxy would be dramatically affected, and any life forms would likely die as the jet's radiation transformed the planets' atmosphere.

    Oops

The following was just forwarded to me:

These men are installing and setting solid steel pillars in concrete to stop vehicles from parking on the pavement outside a sports bar in downtown Norman, OK. They are cleaning up at the end of the day.

How long do you think it will be before they realize where their vehicle is parked?

    MASSFILC goodies
For today's MASSFILC meeting, I'll be bringing spicy gingerbread with fruit jelly and dark chocolate, made in Dresden and bought in Cardullo's.

I haven't tried the stuff before, but it sounds like the very definition of goodness.

The snow is supposed to hold off till after midnight, so we should be safe.

Sometimes Muslims are more tolerant than Christians
A group of Jews was assaulted in a New York subway for responding to "Merry Christmas" with "Happy Hanukkah," and a Muslim came to their aid.

    Bad news from Terry Pratchett
According to a letter from Terry Pratchett on Discworld News, he has been diagnosed with a rare form of early onset Alzheimer's.

He does stress that he aten't dead yet, but this is really depressing.

    The typo-haunted world

Today I noticed that my review of Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World has a weird sentence in it:

He notes that polls indicate that large numbers of Americans believe that astrology is valid, that aliens in UFO's visit Earth regularly and abduct people, and that students here are frighteningly ignorant of science.

Er... I'm not sure what that means, but it's not quite what I intended to say. I'll fix it right away, but wanted to share my amusement first.

    Buildings of the near future
Take a look at these buildings which are expected to be built in the near future, or have already started construction. Whatever you think of them, they aren't boring.

No. 3, the CCTV Headquarters in China, looks like something designed by Escher. No. 4, the Regatta Hotel in Jakarta, could have come from Steve Jobs. As for No. 7, haven't I seen that at a science fiction art show?

    The Golden Compass
It could be lonely for a while here, but some people have to be first in getting away from the nanny site -- or should that be babushka site? -- that LiveJournal has become. Putting some content here will encourage more filkers and fen to move over, I hope.

Yesterday I realized there's a problem with The Golden Compass which I hadn't recognized, because it's practically the opposite of what the raucous debates would suggest. The changes to the Magisterium actually insult religion more strongly than the original book does, and (what's more important) without any real point.

In the novel, the General Oblation Board believes it's doing good -- it's aiming for nothing less than the abolition of sin. It's crazy (but no crazier than killing God), and Mrs. Coulter is fanatical about it, but their belief is genuine.

In the movie, the Magisterium is just another Evil Empire. Rather than aiming at making sinless people with its experiments, the Gobblers want to make docile puppets.

It seems to be a rule (as LiveJournal is ironically proving) that when you set out to offend nobody, you often become more offensive.

I'm keeping this account in reserve in case it's necessary to bail out from LiveJournal. If I ever actually do that, hopefully I'll have a chance to let you know with a LiveJournal post.
